Description of the Works

The specialist works carried out on Buildings “B” and “C” of the renowned I.T.I.S. “Volterra” school complex in Ancona represent an advanced engineering project in the field of seismic safety, funded by the European Union under the NextGenerationEU programme and Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Within this project of major public and social significance, Edilsystem S.r.l. acted as a specialist technology partner for the execution of the special structural works.

The primary objective of the project was to drastically reduce the seismic forces acting on the existing building through the installation of a seismic base isolation system comprising 105 elastomeric isolators and 103 multidirectional sliding bearings, combined with an extensive programme of structural joint confinement using innovative composite materials.

As part of the completion of the retrofit works, Edilsystem S.r.l. also carried out supplementary strengthening and confinement of the adjacent structural elements using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) systems. Following appropriate hydrodemolition, mechanical grinding and dust removal of the concrete substrate, exposed reinforcement bars were treated with passivating products and the original geometries were restored using two-component controlled-shrinkage mortars. The strengthening system was completed by applying, while the substrate was still fresh, a unidirectional ultra-high-modulus carbon fibre fabric with a weight of 600 g/m² and an elastic modulus of 390 GPa.
