Description of the Works

The project involved the execution of specialist structural upgrading, retrofit seismic improvement and energy efficiency works at the “I.T.I. E. Fermi” school complex in Ascoli Piceno. Edilsystem S.r.l. acted as the specialist subcontractor exclusively responsible for the high-technology structural works.

The structural design included the installation of an advanced seismic base isolation system comprising 170 double concave curved surface sliding isolators, designed to decouple the seismic response of the superstructure from the existing foundations. Under this specialist contract, Edilsystem was fully responsible for implementing the complex retrofit procedure in accordance with the project engineering guidelines.

The operational phases began with the controlled relief of static loads, achieved by installing temporary structural support systems and transferring the column loads using temporary hydraulic jacks with dedicated steel shims. This was followed by controlled cutting of the load-bearing reinforced concrete sections of the existing columns using diamond saw and wire technology. The cut surfaces were then regularised and levelled to allow installation of the upper and lower perforated bearing plates.

Once the installation areas had been prepared, the company carried out the positioning and mechanical fastening of the 170 double concave curved surface seismic isolators, connecting them to the anchor bolts and embedded sleeves incorporated into the structural enlargements.
