Description of the Works

Structural restoration and regulatory upgrading of the viaduct’s prestressed reinforced concrete beams.

The project addressed severe deterioration of the lower beam flanges and oxidation of the prestressing tendons caused by the infiltration of rainwater and de-icing salts from the bridge deck.

The works carried out included:

• Removal of deteriorated concrete and application of passivating anti-corrosion treatments to the exposed reinforcement and steel wires.
• Restoration of the concrete cover through the application of special non-shrink repair mortars.

The application of the composite strengthening system increased the ultimate bending resistance of the beams, compensating for the loss of efficiency of the deteriorated prestressing tendons without increasing the self-weight of the structure.
