Description of the Works

The project involved specialist restoration, structural strengthening and static upgrading works on the Via Nazionale bridge over the Po River, located in the Municipality of Paesana and dating back to 1945.

In particular, Edilsystem S.r.l. acted as the main contractor to address the severe deterioration caused by carbonation and the penetration of aggressive agents, which had compromised the deck beams and caused concrete cover spalling, resulting in the exposure of the reinforcing steel.

The specialist works included:

• Substrate preparation;
• Treatment of reinforcing steel;
• Section rebuilding and thixotropic repair;
• Strengthening works through the application of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) fabrics, plate bonding and the installation of steel bars parallel to the existing hangers. The new steel hangers were installed by core drilling through the arch, anchored using a high-performance two-component structural epoxy resin, and tensioned to a calibrated tightening torque of 240 N·m.
